FAT LOSS MISTAKES IN 2012:

By: Dave Herber, Fuerte Men Health Correspondent

As the end of 2011 approaches, you may be preparing yourself a fresh set of New Year’s resolutions or, if you’re more enlightened, some S.M.A.R.T Fat Loss Goals. Here’s a brief review of things you SHOULD NOT DO if you want to be successful in your fat-loss quest in 2012.

1) Weigh Yourself Daily: When you’re trying to lose fat, it’s easy to become scale-obsessed. Weighing yourself too much can lead to panic if you feel like you aren’t seeing results. There are several factors that can affect what the scale says. Depending on hydration levels, weight can fluctuate two to ten pounds a day. You weigh more at night than in the morning. So weigh yourself once a week, at the same time and under the same conditions to get a more level perspective of how your fat loss is coming.

HEALTHY CHRISTMAS GIFTS

The Right Gift for a Fuerte Man

migxasBy: Miguel Martinez, Fuerte Men Fitness Correspondent

Are you dating a "Fuerte" man? If so, then he probably hits the gym and takes care of himself.  Here are my top five suggestions for fitness gift giving this year...

Heart Rate Monitor - Getting the most out of your training doesn't always mean working faster or harder. With a heart rate monitor, you can make sure you're not over or under training and make each session count. Your maximum heart rate (MHR) is the fastest rate at which your heart will beat in one minute. There are many sophisticated ways to determine your MHR but the standard for calculating MHR is with the formula 220-age. So if you're 40 years old then your MHR would be 180.  To burn fat and calories you should aim for 75-85% of your MHR.  A heart rate monitor is a perfect gift for someone that is looking to get the most out of their time exercising.

Apple iTunes Gift Card - More than likely your Fuerte man has an iPod he listens to while exercising and this makes a great gift so he can update his music library with some new motivating tunes to keep him pushing hard toward his fitness goals!

Get the V-Shape You Want

By Miguel Martinez, Fuerte Men Fitness Correspondent

Shoulders are the best muscle group to help you look your best for many reasons: first, the larger your shoulders the smaller your waist looks. Second, the shoulders top out your back contributing to that v-taper everyone longs for in the back. Third, shoulders help you get that separation from the bicep & triceps making your arms stand out and look bigger and lastly, good shoulders help you look built and athletic when you’re fully clothed.

The first thing I recommend to anyone starting a shoulder workout is to warm up your rotator cuff. The best exercise I enjoy doing are dumbbell or cable external rotations with light weight…I’m 225lbs and I only use a 5 or 10lb dumbbell or plate but I do about 30 reps to get it warmed up and get the blood flowing.
