A Conversation About Identityfman

Fuerte Men News

The Pew Hispanic Center recently published "When Labels Don't Fit: Hispanics and their Views of Identity." The report was based on a nationwide survey that found most Hispanics don't embrace the term "Hispanic." And even fewer prefer the term "Latino." Refer to the chart to the right for details. Key findings from the report also touch on language, shared cultures, and views on identify with “American.” A new interactive graphic highlighting key findings from the report is also available

In the days following the release, hundreds of people offered their observations on social media, and scores of newspapers and websites published articles, commentaries and editorials.

The Pew Hispanic Center wants to continue the conversation by hearing from individuals. The center invited journalists, scholars and civic leaders to share their views. Each day for the next two weeks, the Pew Hispanic Center will publish commentaries on their website.  They also invite you to join the discussion and share your thoughts, views and personal stories about your identity on their Pew Hispanic Center Facebook page

Note from Fuerte Men Publisher Sidney Alvarez:

I just wanted to take this opportunity to share my thoughts briefly on this topic. I would identify myself as a human being first, then American second. “Hispanic” or “Latino” I would use as part of my description to offer people insight into my personal heritage, but neither label really defines me because I don’t want to be defined. I’m not simple enough to be defined. I don’t think any person can be limited to such simplicity. We can offer generalizations, but not single words. I think the important thing here is that we have the power to identify ourselves and not let others do the defining.
